The short answer: if you want Christmas, New Year, February half-term or Easter, book now. Skiers are reserving peak weeks earlier than ever this season, and the best chalets in popular resorts are going first. If your dates are flexible, though, waiting can work in your favour: January and March often have availability right up to the last minute.

Here's when the busy weeks fall this winter, why they're filling so fast, and when it pays to wait.

When are the peak weeks?

The busiest weeks are set by school holidays, both British and French. Where they overlap, chalets and slopes fill up fastest.

  • Christmas: French school holidays start on Saturday 19 December, the same day most chalets change over, and most UK schools break up around the same time.
  • New Year: the week from Saturday 26 December into early January is one of the most sought-after of the season.
  • February half-term: most UK schools have the week of 15 February 2027 off. French holidays are staggered by zone between early February and early March, and this year two zones overlap with UK half-term, making it the busiest week of the winter.
  • Easter: early this year, with Easter Sunday on 28 March. Read our guide to why Easter 2027 is great for skiing.

UK half-term dates vary by local authority, and some areas take a different week, so check your school's calendar before you book.

Why peak weeks are selling out earlier

Ski holiday companies report that bookings for Christmas, New Year and half-term are well ahead of last year, with many families booking months earlier than they used to. A few reasons:

  • Families have fixed dates. If you're tied to school holidays, there's no flexibility, so people book as soon as they can.
  • Groups need the right chalet. A chalet that sleeps a large group, close to the lifts and with a hot tub, is rare. When it's gone, it's gone.
  • Spreading the cost. Many hosts and travel companies offer deposit and payment plans, so booking early no longer means paying everything up front.
  • Travel sells out too. The Eurostar ski train, flights to Geneva and Eurotunnel crossings on peak Saturdays all get busier and more expensive as the season approaches.

When it pays to wait

Not everyone needs to book months ahead. If your dates are flexible, the quieter weeks of the season can offer better value and emptier slopes:

  • January: after the New Year week, resorts go quiet. The snow is often excellent and the slopes are at their emptiest.
  • Early December: a great choice for high, snow-sure resorts that open in late November or early December.
  • March, outside Easter: long days, good snow and fewer families on the slopes.
  • Late availability: some hosts have gaps close to the date and are happy to fill them. Booking directly makes it easy to ask.

The trade-off is choice. Wait, and you'll have fewer chalets to pick from, especially larger ones. If you have a particular chalet in mind, it's worth asking the host about availability sooner rather than later.

How to book peak weeks well

  • Decide on the essentials first: how many bedrooms and bathrooms, catered or self-catered, and how close to the lifts. Our guide to what makes a chalet luxurious helps you prioritise.
  • Check the deposit and cancellation terms. Ask when the balance is due, and what happens if you need to cancel.
  • Take out travel insurance when you book, not just before you travel, so you're covered if plans change.
  • Book the journey early. Peak Saturdays are busy on every route. See our guides to driving and taking the train.
  • Think about lift passes and ski school. In peak weeks, children's ski school groups fill up early, so book lessons as soon as you have dates.

Book direct and save

Booking directly with the host means no platform fees, and often a better rate for longer stays or repeat guests. You can also ask questions before you commit: about the walk to the lifts, the deposit, or whether they can hold a week while you confirm with your group.
